Last February 21, 2026, the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum officially ushered in the Lunar New Year with a vibrant and meaningful Grand Opening celebration. From 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the museum doors were opened to the public with free entrance for all, welcoming families, students, and heritage enthusiasts to take part in a day filled with culture, tradition, and community spirit.
As museum staff, it was heartwarming to witness the overwhelming support and excitement from our guests who joined us in celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse. The entire museum was transformed into a festive space that honored Chinese-Filipino heritage while encouraging interactive learning and participation.

Engaging Cultural Activities
Guests of all ages enjoyed a variety of immersive activities prepared by the museum team:
- Prosperity Tree Experience – Visitors wrote their wishes and aspirations for 2026 on angpaos and personally hung them on our Prosperity Tree, symbolizing hope, abundance, and new beginnings. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Jose Soberano III of Cebu Landmasters, Inc. for generously sponsoring the Golden Prosperity Tree. His invaluable contribution made it possible to bring this symbolic installation to fruition, giving visitors the opportunity to engage in a beloved cultural tradition and enriching the overall festive atmosphere. Moving forward, the Golden Prosperity Tree will remain a centerpiece of our annual Lunar New Year celebrations, helping cultivate a meaningful tradition that will endure for many years to come.

- Kids Coloring Area – A creative corner for children and families to enjoy Lunar New Year-themed illustrations.

- 2026 Horoscope Station – Guests explored what the Year of the Fire Horse holds for their Chinese zodiac signs.

- Maze and Line Game Challenge – Fun and interactive games that brought laughter and friendly competition into the celebration.

Lion Dance Performances: A Crowd Favorite
One of the highlights of the day was the much-anticipated Lion Dance performances from the CEA Chinese Lion Dancers held at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. The rhythmic drums, cymbals, and vibrant lion movements energized the entire museum grounds, drawing cheers and applause from the audience. The performances symbolized prosperity, good fortune, and the driving away of negative energy—setting an auspicious tone for the year ahead.

Continuing the Celebration
The Lunar New Year festivities at the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum continue every Friday to Sunday until March 3, 2026, allowing more visitors to experience the celebration and explore the museum’s cultural offerings.
Through this Grand Opening, the museum reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting Chinese-Filipino heritage in Cebu. We are deeply grateful to everyone who celebrated with us and made the event a success. As we step into 2026 together, may this year bring prosperity, growth, and strengthened community ties for all.
