Cebu City, Philippines — October 2025

In response to the recent series of earthquakes that affected various parts of the Philippines, the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum has announced a temporary closure to allow for a comprehensive building inspection and safety assessment.

On September 30, 2025, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck offshore northern Cebu near Bogo City, causing significant structural damage across parts of Central Visayas. The tremor, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, was felt throughout Cebu, including in the city center where the museum is located.

More recently, on October 10, 2025, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Mindanao, reminding communities across the country of the continued need for vigilance and preparedness.

As part of its safety protocols, the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum is currently undergoing a full inspection in coordination with the property administration and local authorities to ensure the building’s structural integrity before reopening to the public.

“Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our visitors, staff, and the preservation of our collections,” the museum management stated. “We are taking every precaution necessary to ensure that the museum remains a safe space for learning, reflection, and cultural exchange.”

The Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum, housed in the historic Gotiaoco Building, stands as a testament to the enduring ties between the Chinese and Cebuano communities. While temporarily closed, the museum continues to uphold its mission of heritage preservation and public education.

Updates on reopening will be announced through the museum’s official channels once inspections are complete.

Stay safe, Cebu.
